Maffett Memorial Library History
The City of Groesbeck opened its first public library on the
second floor of the Groesbeck City Hall on June 26, 1976. The
establishment of the library was the result of the
efforts of many Groesbeck citizens working together to
provide a much needed service for the community. On September
1, 1977 the Maffett Memorial Library was awarded membership to
the Central Texas Library System, a membership which the
library still maintains today. The library quickly
outgrew its residence at city hall and on March 1, 1978
moved to the Housing Authority Headquarters. Once again,
the library quickly outgrew its location and plans for a new
library building began to form. Mr. Harold Maffett
donated half a city block as the site for the future
library building. The Chamber of Commerce as well as
many local clubs and private citizens contributed financially to
the library building project. On August 18, 1981 the Maffett
Memorial Library opened its doors in the current
location. Throughout its 28 years, the library
has received generous and unending support from
the Groesbeck community.
